Where did the North Side Brigade evolve from?

The North Side Fire Brigade arose from the ashes of  the Chicago Firefighter Strike of 1980. The Chicago Fire Department was then, and still is a "Brotherhood" it is a place where a helping hand is always near by. Our Job, on the Chicago Fire Department, is one where we watch out for one and other. Members could easily put their differences aside for the betterment of the Fire Department.

In 1980, the then candidate for Mayor, Jayne Byrne campaigned and begged for the endorsement from both the Chicago Police as well as the Chicago Firefighters Unions. In return She, Jayne Byrne promised to give both the Police and Firefighters Unions a labor contract.

Once Jayne Byrne was elected into office, She like most politicians, She refused to honor the campaigned promises she had made to both the Police and Fire Unions. After waiting and negotiating in good faith, the Chicago Fire Department's Local # 2, had no choice but to engage in a job action. The Firefighters were ready to walk out and strike, for what they were promised.

February 14, Valentines Day 1980 , This was the day when the courageous members of the Chicago Fire Department stood up and walked out. Led by The Chicago Firefighters Union.  I.A.F.F., Local # 2. These men were without a paycheck for 23 days. They were forced to find an alternative income in witch to support their families. The Firefighters who walked out that day were fired by Jayne Byrne and the City of Chicago on numerous occasions. Although sometimes in freezing temperatures, these firefighters NEVER  left the picket line. They  kept warm by huddling around fifty five gallon drums (barrels) set afire. These burning barrels are what became the birth place of the "Brother Hood of the Barrel".  These men walked out for what they believed. We the Chicago Firefighters today, have a contract because of the efforts of those firefighters back in 1980. The men who had the courage to stand up and walk out for what was right. Frank "MOON" Muscare, the then President of Chicago Firefighters Union, Local #2. was even sent to prison as a result of the Chicago Fire Fighters Strike of 1980.

The North Side Fire Brigade was built by these same men, The men who had the courage to risk everything they had for the betterment of everyone. Again, it is because of those Fire Fighters back in 1980, That we have a contract, and the benefits that we all enjoy today!

What is B.O.B.?

B.O.B. stands for "The Brotherhood of the Barrel". This B.O.B. has became kind of  like a trademark of The Chicago Firefighters Strike of 1980. The Term B.O.B. was derived from the men that were on strike in the cold winter months of February and March 1980. To keep warm, they would gather around fifty-five gallon drums (barrels) set afire. Regardless of the cold, At no time, not for any reason during The Chicago Firefighters Strike of 1980, were the picket lines ever abandoned. Again, it is because of the effort and the courage those Firefighters had back in 1980, that we have a contract and the benefits we all enjoy today. You will often see B.O.B. posted on an add in the fire house, when B.O.B. is present on a poster or a flyer for a promotion, a retirement party or any other party for that matter. This means, this particular party only welcomes those who did not cross the Fire fighters picket line of 1980. Any person who worked at the fire house during the strike of 1980 is not welcome to a B.O.B. Party.

When The North Side Fire Brigade first came in to existence after The Chicago Fire Department Strike of 1980, The first motion that was brought up for discussion, was that any member who worked as a Firefighter for the City of Chicago during the strike of 1980 would not be allowed to join The North Side Fire Brigade or be a welcome  member of the North Side Fire Brigade. Unfortunately over the years this has caused great disharmony both on and off of The Chicago Fire Department for the past Twenty-Six years. The decisions you made today will always effect your future.

WHAT IS A FIREMAN?

He is just like you and me.
Yet he stands taller than most of us.
He is a fireman.
He puts it all on the line
when the bell rings.
A Fireman is the most fortunate
and least fortunate of men.
He is a gentle man.
He is a man who appreciates
simple pleasures of life;
-hot coffee held in numb,
unbending fingers
-the camaraderie of brave men,
willing to risk their lives daily
-the divine peace and selfless
service of a job well done.
He doesn't criticize others or shout
obscenities. When he marches, it is to
honor fallen comrade. He doesn't
preach the brotherhood of man.
He lives it. Heaven hold a
special place for our firemen
